Exploring the Non-Gun Challenge
When it comes to Doom: The Dark Ages, the question on everyone’s mind is: can you triumph without touching a single gun? According to game director Hugo Martin, it’s theoretically possible, but it wouldn’t be a walk in the park. During a chat with PC Gamer, he shared that trying to complete the game using only melee attacks and parries could certainly add a layer of difficulty to your gameplay.
Challenge Accepted or Not?
Martin acknowledged that while the concept of a melee-only challenge seems “slightly out of the bounds,” it’s definitely something hardcore players might take on. If those dedicated souls managed to conquer Dark Souls with no damage and attempted pistol-only runs in Doom 2016, who’s to say they won’t adapt their skills to the new mechanics of Doom: The Dark Ages? After all, the developers believe in the power of the shield and melee mechanisms that are now at players’ disposal.
Is It Worth the Try?
However, there’s a catch. Producer Marty Stratton has a word of caution: going melee-only could lead to a janky and not-so-fun experience. Much in the way that the pistol in Doom 2016 was less than stellar, players might find themselves frustrated with a similar approach in Doom: The Dark Ages. So, while the possibility of beating the game without guns is tantalizing, be prepared for a challenge that could knock you off your feet… if not by enemies, then by sheer difficulty!
