David Brevik’s Reflections on Modern ARPGs: A Lost Essence

Introduction to the Debate

In the realm of Action Role-Playing Games (ARPGs), few voices carry as much weight as David Brevik, the co-founder of Blizzard and a key designer behind the iconic Diablo series. In a recent discussion, Brevik expressed his concerns regarding the current state of ARPGs, suggesting that fast leveling and an overwhelming amount of loot have ‘cheapened’ the genre.

The Shift in Gameplay Mechanics

Brevik highlights a significant change in gameplay mechanics that he believes detracts from the experience. He stated, “I think that ARPGs in general have started to lean into this: kill swaths of enemies all over the place extremely quickly.” This rapid pace, characterized by a barrage of enemies and continuous loot drops, contrasts sharply with the more measured and personal approach found in earlier titles like Diablo II.

The Personal Touch of Diablo II

One of Brevik’s key arguments is that the pacing of Diablo II created a unique tension and engagement with the game. “The pacing on Diablo II, I think, is great. That’s one of the reasons it’s endured,” he notes. He believes that the current trend of overwhelming players with a flood of loot and insignificant enemy encounters nullifies the strategic depth and emotional connection that characterized the first two Diablo games. His discontent with the present experiences leads him to conclude, “I just don’t feel like that is a cool experience. I find it kind of silly.”
