Introduction to Monster Hunter Wilds Weapons

It was almost 2 am last night when I saw something that gave me the biggest grin: a 66-second video showcasing the hunting horn in Monster Hunter Wilds. I watched it once, then again, then turned the phone to my partner to show her. ‘Oh, that’s sick,’ she muttered half-asleep as the horn user played a melody that created an area-of-effect buff on the battlefield.

Overview Videos: Short and Sweet

The hunting horn video is part of a series of videos showcasing what’s new with each weapon type in Wilds. These videos are concise yet highly informative, highlighting new moves and mechanics that will be available to players. Capcom could have easily published these videos as YouTube shorts or TikToks, but it seems the company bet on Monster Hunter fans being eager for any new gameplay footage. In the four days since they started publishing them, these overview videos have amassed millions of views.

Spotlight on Weapon Favorites

Personally, I can’t stop rewatching the overview of my favorite weapon: the gunlance. Most of the video covers basic moves that have been mainstays for the weapon across multiple games, but it also introduces some new maneuvers that look absolutely thrilling. With Wilds’ new focus strikes, gunlancers can charge toward a monster, unleash the wyrmstake, and continuously drill into the beast.

New Mechanics and Focus Mode

Focus mode and focus strikes appear to be a new cornerstone of Monster Hunter Wilds’ gameplay. This mechanic seems to replace switch skills from Monster Hunter Rise while offering a more grounded approach to combat. Focus mode allows players to aim attacks at specific body parts, highlighting wounds and making it easier to target weak spots. For example, the new great sword move allows hunters to dig the sword into a wound and drag the blade across the monster’s body, adding a visceral layer to the combat experience.

Looking Forward

With more videos yet to be released, including fan-favorites like the dual blades, hunting hammer, and long sword, it’s clear that Capcom has much more to reveal. The community eagerly awaits additional insights and demonstrations, and if the initial videos are any indication, Monster Hunter Wilds is shaping up to be the biggest installment in the franchise to date.
