Today, Microsoft has put an end to the Microsoft Teams chaos that has plagued Windows users for years. The company announced that there will only be one Microsoft Teams app for Windows going forward. For many users, this marks a notable improvement in usability and convenience.
The Journey of Microsoft Teams
When Microsoft first launched Teams, it allowed various types of accounts to utilize the same client for communication. This included personal Microsoft customers as well as work or education customers. However, the decision to create a separate version of Teams for personal use led to confusion and frustration. Users often found themselves opening the wrong app, causing unnecessary difficulties.
The New Unified Teams App
Microsoft’s new unified Teams app is now available for users on Windows 10, Windows 11, and Mac devices. The app brings several improvements including the capability to sign in to multiple personal, work, or education accounts. These accounts can now open in side-by-side windows within a single Teams app. Additionally, there is an account selector when joining team meetings and an option to join as a guest. A new community feature has also been added for personal users.

The new app is preinstalled in Windows 11, version 24H2, and will be updated automatically on Windows systems. It is also available for download on the Microsoft website. Although Microsoft hasn’t specified whether it is necessary to manually remove one of the versions, the unified approach is expected to greatly enhance the usability of Teams for its users.
While it took Microsoft some time to address the splitting of Teams into two apps, the new unified app signifies a major improvement for users.
