Quicker Turnarounds for Japanese RPG Localizations: A Sign of Things to Come

The Evolution of Japanese RPG Localizations

Fans of Japanese RPGs have often found themselves exercising extreme patience as they wait for official English translations. Iconic series such as Nihon Falcom’s Ys have historically taken over a year to see an official release outside Japan. This extended waiting time, however, might be becoming a thing of the past, thanks to recent efforts from publishers like NIS America.

Ys 10: Nordics – A Promising Sign

The latest entry in the Ys series, Ys 10: Nordics, is set to launch worldwide three months quicker than its predecessor Ys 9: Monstrum Nox. According to NIS America, this is just the beginning of a trend towards faster localizations. During a recent digital showcase of Ys 10: Nordics, NIS America’s Alan Costa confirmed that quicker turnarounds are indeed a focus moving forward.

Advancing Localization Techniques

When asked whether fans should expect faster translations for future RPGs, Costa’s response was direct: “Yes.” While Costa couldn’t dive into specific internal processes, he emphasized that significant efforts are being made to speed up localization without compromising quality. “Finding that balancing act is something that we’ve been working on for years at this point,” Costa elaborated.

The Trails series, also developed by Nihon Falcom, has long been known for its hefty text content, making localization a challenging task. However, NIS America recently announced that Trails Through Daybreak 2 would release in early 2025, a substantial timeline reduction from previous entries. These announcements signal a promising shift in how rapidly fans worldwide can expect to receive localized versions of their favorite titles.

Balancing Speed and Quality

While faster localization is a goal, Costa stressed that quality remains paramount. “We do want to bring [games] out as quickly as possible, but not at the expense of the localization quality,” he commented. Balancing speed with the intricacies of accurate and engaging translations is a challenge, but one that NIS America is tackling head-on.
