Tim Cain: A Master of Cult Classics

It’s hard to discuss innovative RPGs without mentioning Tim Cain. As a co-creator of the iconic Fallout franchise, his work shaped the gaming landscape. Yet, while Fallout took off, his other gems, such as Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines and Arcanum, lingered in the realm of cult classic status. Fans often wonder, why no sequels?

The Cult Classic Dilemma

Cain often finds himself on the receiving end of questions like, “Why don’t you make another game like Bloodlines?” Unfortunately, the business of gaming doesn’t always align with the desires of passionate fans. Heroically remarking on the situation, he quips, “the problem is the cult part.” The sales figures simply weren’t substantial enough for publishers to greenlight a sequel, a harsh reality in the world of gaming.

Remembering Troika’s Struggles

After the release of Bloodlines, Troika Games, the studio Cain co-founded, faced a rollercoaster of challenges. Despite their talent, steady success eluded them. The studio ultimately shuttered its doors in early 2005. Tim candidly suggests, “You should have bought it,” reminding fans that the love for cult classics often doesn’t translate into sales. It’s a bittersweet lesson—the enduring adoration for games like Bloodlines stands proud, but its legacy is overshadowed by what could have been.
