Introduction to Firefox’s Automatic Picture-in-Picture Mode

Mozilla is working on a new feature for its Firefox web browser: automatic Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode. Currently available in Firefox Nightly 130, this feature could potentially launch in Firefox stable later this year. This blog post explores the details and functionality of this innovative feature.

What is Picture-in-Picture Mode?

Most modern web browsers support Picture-in-Picture mode. This feature allows users to display video content in a separate window on the system. It is particularly useful for keeping an eye on a video while switching to another tab to perform other tasks. Until now, activating Picture-in-Picture mode required manual intervention—users had to click on an icon while hovering over the video to launch it. Firefox would then display the video in its own window, allowing users to move it around, resize it, and control playback.

Automating Picture-in-Picture Mode in Firefox

If you run the latest Firefox Nightly, which is currently at version 130, you may enable the newly added automatic Picture-in-Picture mode in the browser. Once enabled, Firefox will automatically launch a Picture-in-Picture window when you play a video and switch to another tab. This enhancement aims to provide a seamless experience, ensuring that video playback continues uninterrupted without requiring manual activation of the PiP mode.

How to Enable Automatic Picture-in-Picture Mode

To enable this handy feature, you can follow these steps: load about:preferences in the Firefox Nightly browser. From there, navigate to the relevant settings to activate automatic Picture-in-Picture mode. This will ensure that the feature is always ready whenever you switch tabs after launching a video.

This new development enhances user experience and sets Firefox apart by making the Picture-in-Picture feature more convenient and easier to use.
