Microsoft’s Game Release Strategy for 2023

Microsoft has recently reevaluated its release schedule for the upcoming months, resulting in adjustments that have significant implications for several highly anticipated games. According to The Verge’s Notepad newsletter, one such game, Avowed, originally slated for a November release, is now expected to be delayed to early 2025.

Reasons Behind Avowed’s Delay

Despite being in “good shape” to meet its initial deadline, the decision to push back Avowed stems from a desire to avoid overcrowding the holiday release calendar. Notably, the delay of Stalker 2 into November is likely a contributing factor. Although Stalker 2 is not developed by Microsoft, it will be an Xbox and PC exclusive, premiering on Game Pass, which heightens competition within the platform.

What’s Coming This Fall Instead

The strategic delay aligns with Microsoft’s broader plan to alleviate the congested release window and maintain continuous engagement with Game Pass subscribers. Noteworthy releases this fall include Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Call of Duty Black Ops 6, and the first expansion for Diablo 4, titled Vessel of Hatred. Another critical release includes Dragon Age: The Veilguard, which debuted during Microsoft’s summer showcase.

Avowed: A Game Worth the Wait

Initially announced in 2020 with a pre-rendered trailer, Avowed is a first-person action RPG set in the vibrant fantasy world of the Pillars of Eternity series. Obsidian Entertainment has since reworked the combat mechanics to address feedback from its initial reveal, aiming for a “more juicy” gameplay experience. Given the dynamic environment and enhanced combat, the delay could ultimately benefit both Microsoft and gamers, providing a polished experience when it finally launches in early 2025.

While delays can be disappointing, Microsoft’s strategic decisions reflect a commitment to delivering quality gaming experiences, making the wait worthwhile.
