A Year of Baldur’s Gate 3

As Baldur’s Gate 3 celebrates its one-year anniversary, Larian Studios has unveiled some intriguing data about player decisions across various playthroughs. Sharing these insights on X (formerly known as Twitter), they offer a glimpse into the unconventional ways players experience this immersive game.

The Strangest Outcomes

Among the data, one of the most surprising outcomes involves Lae’zel, a githyanki warrior. According to Larian, only 34 players ended up with Lae’zel committing suicide after being rejected by Vlaakith, the immortal witch empress. To reach this rare ending, a Lae’zel origin player must stay loyal to Vlaakith in the gith personal quest and choose to become a mind flayer when given the choice by the Emperor.

The dynamics around becoming a mind flayer add more tension, especially considering the decision to either spare or kill Orpheus, the exiled gith prince. In this rare ending, mind flayer Lae’zel contacts Vlaakith via astral projection only to be rejected, leading to the option of ending her life or continuing regardless.

Obscure Choices and Hidden Outcomes

One of the more obscure but fascinating choices revealed was the ability for avatar Gale to transform his familiar Tara from a tressym into a hairless cat by keeping the crown of Karsus. This dark yet whimsical choice was experienced by just 2,185 players. Such decisions attest to Larian’s dedication to respecting player choices and offering varied, rich narratives.

The Essence of Player Agency

Larian’s approach ensures that even the wild, seemingly incongruous choices have meaningful consequences in the game’s world. Whether you navigate the game with an eye for meticulous loyalty or chaotic exploration, Baldur’s Gate 3 celebrates and responds to player agency in unparalleled ways.

Ultimately, these unique outcomes and extreme scenarios highlight not just the depth of Baldur’s Gate 3, but also the player’s power to shape their journey in unexpected, sometimes irrational, ways. This is the core of what makes the game an enduring success even after a year.
