Exploring Star Wars Outlaws: A Fresh Take on Open World Adventure

A Surprising Delight from Ubisoft

When I first fired up Star Wars Outlaws, I was prepared for a double dose of disappointment: both from yet another Ubisoft open-world game and from yet another Star Wars adaptation. However, Ubisoft has defied expectations with Outlaws, delivering a game that not only entertains but also immerses you deeply into the Star Wars universe.

An Authentic Star Wars Playground

The Disney era of Star Wars has made it easy to criticize the franchise, but it has also inspired a host of exceptional games. Few, however, have truly captured the essence of inhabiting the galaxy of the original trilogy. Outlaws breaks this mold by offering a more authentic setting and gameplay experience. It feels like stepping into the world of the films, reminiscent of the immersion previously brought by Star Wars Galaxies.

Grounded in the Galactic Underworld

Set between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, Outlaws eschews the high-powered Force users in favor of a grounded experience. The protagonist, Kay Vess, isn’t a Jedi but a scoundrel navigating cantinas and mingling with ne’er-do-wells. The game’s environments blend majestic vistas with gritty, lived-in cities that truly feel alive. This sense of place and realism sets Outlaws apart from other adaptations.

Capturing the Spirit of the Originals

Outlaws captures the humor, adventure, and spirit of the original Star Wars trilogy. Unlike recent spin-offs, sequels, and prequels that attempt to elevate the saga’s complexity, Outlaws brings it back to simpler times. It’s a roguish romp where you can punch stormtroopers and upset crime bosses, all while having fun in a setting that feels uniquely Star Wars. Ubisoft and Massive Entertainment have succeeded in delivering a game that is both charming and true to the essence of the classic trilogy.
