Unexpected Announcement on PlayStation Store
Several writers at PC Gamer, including myself, were taken aback when we encountered a surprising store page description for Red Dead Redemption on the PlayStation website. The description proclaimed the arrival of a PC port for the game, which hasn’t been released on PC since its debut back in 2010. Intriguingly, this announcement was found on the PlayStation 4 store page. Luckily, I managed to capture a screenshot before it was taken down.
The Details of the “Not-Announcement”
The store page read, “Experience the epic western adventures that defined a generation—now on PC for the first time ever,” and further mentioned that the port would include both Red Dead Redemption’s baseline 2010 game and the Undead Nightmare expansion. The announcement highlighted the complete single-player experiences, including bonus content from the Game of the Year edition. It also touted 2023 console version upgrades along with PC-specific enhancements like increased resolutions, framerates, support for multiple displays and accessories, and spatial surround sound. However, multiplayer content was notably absent, consistent with the PS4 version released last year.
Possible Explanations and Speculations
This unexpected announcement raises quite a few questions. If a PC port is indeed in the works, why would the announcement details inadvertently appear on PlayStation’s store page? Rockstar Games, owned by Take-Two Interactive, typically keeps such announcements under wraps, so it’s puzzling that this information would surface in this manner. There is a chance that this was a slip-up by Sony, mistakenly drafting copy based on early news. Although dataminers have found hints of a port in recent months, there’s no certainty that the release is imminent. It’s possible that someone at Rockstar, Sony, or their PR firm drafted this announcement months in advance, and it was accidentally published.
