Introduction to Mercenaries in Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred
Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred is continuing the beloved Diablo tradition of allowing players to recruit a team of mercenaries to aid them in their infernal adventures. With the latest trailer revealed at the Gamescom Opening Night Live stream, we got a glimpse of four unique mercenaries: a shieldbearer, a scoundrel, a berserker, and a literal demon.
Mercenaries and Their Archetypes
Details on the specific abilities and roles of these mercenaries are still sparse, but each appears to align closely with Diablo 4’s existing classes. For instance, the shieldbearer is shown holding a magical barrier over a necromancer surrounded by monsters, indicating a support role. Similarly, the berserker’s skills echo abilities used by the barbarian class, such as yanking monsters with ropes similar to the barbarian’s steel grasp.
Synergies with Existing Builds
One of the most exciting aspects of these mercenaries is how they could supplement existing player builds. Sorcerers who specialize in freezing packs of demons could benefit greatly from a demon child that launches fire waves, creating a devastating synergy. Those who prefer ranged classes might hire the scoundrel to provide covering fire or distractions.
Customization and Future Details
The trailer does not delve too deeply into customization options for these mercenaries. In Diablo 3, players could equip mercenaries with hand-me-down armor and customize their skill trees, features that we hope will return in Diablo 4. Blizzard is expected to provide more details during Gamescom this week, but players will have to wait until October 8 to fully experience these mercenaries in the Vessel of Hatred’s campaign.
