The Successor to a Billion-Dollar Chipset

How do you follow up a chipset that brought over $1 billion of revenue into your coffers? MediaTek, the largest supplier of chipsets to the smartphone industry, has the answer: you make an even more powerful and efficient chipset. Following the success of the Dimensity 9300, MediaTek is set to release the Dimensity 9400 application processor (AP), aiming to set a new benchmark in mobile processing power.

Unmatched Performance Configuration

The Dimensity 9400 is expected to feature an advanced configuration consisting of one Cortex-X5 super CPU core running up to 3.4GHz, three Cortex-X4 super CPU cores with a clock speed as high as 2.96GHz, and four Cortex-A720 efficiency-performance CPU cores running as fast as 2.27GHz. Once again, MediaTek forgoes small, low-power efficiency cores, instead offering remarkable performance gains—up to 30% improvement over its predecessor, the Dimensity 9300.

Market Impact and Competitive Landscape

According to reliable leaker Digital Chat Station, the first phones powered by the Dimensity 9400 AP will be released in mid-October, beating the release of phones equipped with its top rival, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. This head start, potentially ranging from two to six weeks, could give MediaTek a significant competitive advantage, with expected early adopters including the Vivo X200 series and the Oppo Find X8 series.

Future Prospects and Financial Expectations

MediaTek’s CEO, Rick Tsai, projects that the success of the Dimensity 9400 will boost the company’s revenues by 50%. The chip will be produced by leading foundry TSMC using its second-generation 3nm process node (N3E), ensuring cutting-edge manufacturing precision. Additionally, a lower-priced Dimensity 8400 chipset is anticipated for slightly lower-price range phones, potentially becoming the largest AP ever made for a smartphone, rumored to include 30 billion transistors.
