Introduction to Gemini’s Transition
As Google progresses with its transition to Gemini, the announcement of phasing out features from the Google Assistant came as no surprise. Since 2016, the Google Assistant has been a reliable virtual helper for Android users, but as we move into 2025, Gemini will officially take its place on most Android devices.
Features Being Retired
With this change, Google is not only focusing on Android phones but also on other devices like Nest smart home gadgets. Several beloved features from the Google Assistant are being retired. Notably, live translation in interpreter mode will no longer allow users to bridge language barriers in real-time. However, individuals can still translate individual words or phrases.
Additionally, family bell announcements, which provided audio alerts for daily events and chores, will also be discontinued. While users won’t be able to set birthday reminders through the Google Assistant anymore, reminders can still be set manually using the standard reminder functions.
What’s Next for Users?
Google’s complete list of feature removals includes capabilities like voice-based photo sharing and daily automated updates. Users accustomed to interacting via Bluetooth or aux-connected car accessories will notice this functionality is also being cut off. These changes raise questions about the next steps for Google Assistant users.
It is expected that many of these features will either return or be upgraded in Gemini. We anticipate further announcements at Google I/O 2025, scheduled for May 20-21. Until the transition is fully unveiled, affected users should explore alternate workflows while adjusting to the specific removals.
