Enhance Your App Security with Face ID on iOS 18

One of the exciting features available in the iOS 18.1 developer beta will soon be available for all users when the stable version of iOS 18 rolls out next month. This new feature allows you to lock an app behind Face ID, providing an added layer of security for your sensitive applications. In addition to this, you can also hide the app icon from your home screen for enhanced privacy.

How to Lock Apps with Face ID

To take advantage of this feature, follow these simple steps. First, choose the app you want to protect, such as a banking app or a securities trading app. There is no limit to the number of apps you can secure this way. From the home screen, long-press the icon of the app you wish to lock. An option labeled “Require Face ID” will appear. Tap on that, and you will be prompted with three choices: Require Face ID, Hide and Require Face ID, and Cancel. Choosing “Require Face ID” will ensure that only your face can unlock and access the app.

Enhancing Security by Hiding App Icons

For an additional layer of privacy, consider using the “Hide and Require Face ID” feature. Selecting this option will not only lock the app but also hide its icon from the home screen. It will be moved to the hidden apps folder in the app library. The icon will stay hidden until Face ID verifies your identity and reveals it in the folder. However, be cautious as hiding the app icon will prevent you from receiving notifications, calls, and alerts from that app. It will also not appear in Siri suggestions.

Conclusion

This new feature in iOS 18 significantly enhances the security and privacy of your apps. By using Face ID and the option to hide app icons, you can ensure that your sensitive information remains protected. Keep an eye out for the stable release of iOS 18 next month to start using this valuable feature.
